  • Choose Stable release if you expect a stable system and want to distribute it into daily use.
  • Choose Nightly build if you want to check if the newer experimental build can solve a question you have in the current stable release. Further you can try FreeNAS 0.7.* nightly build if your hardware is not supported by FreeBSD 6.4 but supported in FreeBSD 7.0/7.1.
  • AMD64 for 64bit cpu,i386 for non-64bit cpu; Download FreeNAS*LiveCD*.ISO and burn it to a CD/CDRW using your favorite tool.
  • Don't burn the *embedded*.img(since 0.69.*) to a CD/CDRW. The *embedded*.img(since 0.69.*) file is used in these situations: The system doesn't have a CD rom; The system doesn't support to boot from CD ROM. Then you can write the image directly to the install destination by following the M0n0wall guide.
  • Boot from the LiveCD,you can run FreeNAS in ram, store configuration file (config.xml) on a floppy/falsh/USB/harddisk, and store your data on harddisk. Or after you boot the LiveCD, you can choose to install FreeNAS to flash/USB/harddisk, and remove the CD from the cd rom after installation.

FreeNAS LiveCD

“LiveCD” is the new name of the old “ISO” ⇒ This release is started from a CDROM, and create a RAM drive for FreeNAS (only one read access during startup), and use a MS DOS (FAT) formatted floppy disk or USB key for saving the configuration file.

FreeNAS Embedded

“Embedded” is the new name of the old “Generic-pc”. ⇒ This release, installed on an hard drive or on a flash device, use a RAM drive (like the LiveCD) for limiting access to a flash devise. But it write the configuration on the flash device.
